Winterizing & Protecting Your
Boat, Jet Ski, or Wave Runner
The common joke about buying a boat
is that it develops into a big dark hole into which
you toss your money. However, if a boater takes precautions,
that need not happen, and instead one's summer toys
will be preserved for many years of enjoyment

To make sure your boat, jet ski or
wave runner don't deteriorate during the winter season,
there are a few simple measures you can take to assure
your water sporting pleasure will be at peak performance
again come Spring.
Helen Ayravainen, a boating expert
[and descendant of five generations of Finnish sea
captains, from Westport, Washington, suggests using
Buffalo Milke Instant Spray wax to maintain both the
ultimate performance and original wet, shiny finish
of your water vehicle. She also advises that you 'don't
forget to disconnect the battery/batteries and store
them somewhere warm, dry and elevated such as on a
wooden block. Change the engine oil and filter, too,'
and 'Many mistakenly don't consider this important
since the motor won't be running - yet they are essential
to a sound winterizing program. If you're dealing
with salt water, you may want to flush out with fresh
water.'
To help protect the internal components,
drain the engine block and manifolds, and fill the
engine with anti-freeze. The lower unit gear oil should
also be drained and refilled with fresh oil in the
stern drives only. 'All external fillings on stern
drives should be greased as well', Ayravainen says…and
finish by spraying on a protective anti-corrosive
film agent on external engine parts.
Ayravainen reminds water sport enthusiasts
that, 'Maintaining the exterior is a must. To remove
a season's worth of overlooked dried fishing remains
and salt-water debris, use one of the new generation
spray waxes like Buffalo Milke that offer all the
benefits of a cleaner, detailer and wax, all-in-one.'
New Hampshire boaters, Charles and
Ilona Train, wax their three cockpit, mahogany reproduction
of a 1929 Hackercraft with Buffalo Milke Instant Spray
Wax prior to storage. 'Buffalo Milke offers all of
the benefits of many products all in one quick spray
and wipe. It has now become a mandatory, easy step
before the tarp goes on for the winter,' says Ilona
Train. 'We found that Buffalo Milke keeps the surface
of our boat in shiny, pristine condition, protecting
it from the harsh New Hampshire winters - and it no
longer takes hours to wax - instead just a few minutes!'
'The common joke about buying a boat
is that it develops into a big dark hole into which
you toss your money. However, if a boater takes these
precautions, that need not happen, and instead one's
summer toys will be preserved for many years of enjoyment,'
advises Ayravainen.
Of course each boat may vary as to
what needs to be done to winterize it. For complete
instructions please see your boat owners' manual or
consult your boat mechanic.
